This is no ordinary diner. The line for the extraordinary pancakes stretches out of the door and around the corner each weekend morning. They offer plain, buckwheat and sweet potato stacks. You can add blueberries or pecans to any kind you choose. Sweet potato pancakes with pecans are a must! The tea list is very impressive. What other diner serves jasmine, lemon ginger and green tea? No tea bags here -- each pot is expertly brewed with loose tealeaves.
We were so inspired by breakfast that we decided to try the diner for dinner. Unfortunately, the dinner experience was mediocre. The diner's Kobe burger was getting so much publicity that we had to try it. Kobe beef that comes from domestic cows raise by Japanese method is a new fad in US restaurants. Most establishments charge an arm and a leg for Kobe burgers, but at the diner we could try it for $10. Unfortunately, it was lousy. I am sure it was great beef, but it came completely unseasoned and practically raw even though we asked for medium. The lamb chops were at the other extreme. They came well done when we asked for medium rare. The mint yogurt sauce served with them had a medicinal taste and the mashed potatoes were watery. At least our dinner ended on a good note with warm pecan pie and vanilla ice cream. It was gooey, nutty, and delicious. Other desserts looked great too, and are worth coming back for.
